Dear WDS Families, what a week we had weather-wise! Despite the weather, our Kindergarten students went to Butterfield Acres on their first field trips. They were so excited to see many types of animals, including, bunnies, goats, sheep, cows and bunnies. In Kindergarten, they have acquired duck eggs that are in an incubator, and they are checking on them daily waiting for them to hatch. This week the Grade 5/6 students have also been doing a pottery art project in partnership with HD Cartwright. We had our 4th fire drill of the year on Friday and students exited the building quickly and quietly. We have two more practice fire drills to complete before the end of June.

Mental Health Week

This year Mental Health Week will run May 6-10, and Hats On for Mental Health Day will take place on May 8. Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Participating schools will relax their hat rules and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school. Students will also participate in a coordinated lesson on understanding mental health and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illnesses.

Spring Concert

We are delighted to extend a special invitation to you for our upcoming spring concert, "Disney Dazzle"! This evening will be a celebration of music, imagination, and the joy of beloved Disney melodies.

Date: Thursday, May 16, 2024

Time: Concert starts at 6:30 pm (students call time will be a staggered entry between 5:45pm-5:55pm). Ms. Dickson will be sending out more information about staggered entry!

Location: West Dalhousie School Gymnasium. The doors to the gym will open at 6:05pm. Seating will be first come first served.

**There will be an additional email sent next week regarding important details for this performance **

If you are unable to attend the evening performance, we are also offering family members the opportunity to see the dress rehearsal during school hours on May 16th. Times for this will be communicated closer to the date.

Prepare to be "dazzled" as our students take the stage to perform an array of Disney classics, from timeless tunes that have captured hearts of generations to the latest musical gems. There will also be a performance featuring a well-known song from Universal Studios! Get ready to experience the wonder of both Disney and Universal Studios in one concert event.

Lunchroom Student Expectations

Students are expected to:

  • Show proper respect and care for self, school and others.
  • Help maintain a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe environment.
  • Exhibit socially responsible and respectful behaviours.
  • Keep hands, feet, and objects to self.
  • Use polite and kind language.
  • Follow directions when asked.
  • Resolve differences without physical violence or abusive language or gestures. Display appropriate positive and polite behaviour.
  • Be inclusive when playing with others.
  • Move throughout the school and lunchtime in a quiet, orderly fashion.
  • Always stay within the school boundaries.
  • Check in with the supervisors for attendance.
  • Notify supervisors if attending a club, on patrol, staying with a teacher, etc. at lunch.
  • Eat own food, not share with others.
  • Use indoor voices in the lunchroom.
  • Stay seated during eating time.
  • Leave the eating area clean.

Please have a conversation with your child as these expectations are essential and are expectations of the CBE.

Punctuality

Please ensure your child arrives between 7:50 am - 7:55 am each day at their designated doors. When students arrive late, it disrupts the classroom routine and frequent absences hurt learning.

Our School Survey

The CBE’s Well Being Survey will be completed by students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 during the month of May. The CBE’s Education Plan prioritizes student voice and well-being in our decision-making processes.  Responses from this anonymous survey are used at the system and school level to recognize and improve what is necessary for students to feel safe, welcome, and cared for when at school.
