Dear WDS Families,

This week we had a Clay for Kids residency where some students worked with glass while others worked on clay pieces. It is amazing to see the artistic talent that exists at WDS. It was a very cold this week and it looks like next week will be cold as well. Students do go outside each day for 2 recess times unless the temperature reaches -20 or colder then students are kept inside. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather each day, including hats, mitts, boots, and snowsuits (jacket/pants).

Celebrating Black History Month

Throughout February, students and staff of the Calgary Board of Education will explore and celebrate the numerous contributions of Black Canadians, peoples, and communities worldwide. Black History Month provides an opportunity for schools to amplify and spotlight the innovative, courageous, and inspiring voices, stories, and contributions of Black Canadians and communities. By honouring these stories and achievements, we can create a foundation of learning for the entire year. This may include inspiring further conversations, continued learning and exploration of the profound legacies and transformative contributions of Black Canadians and peoples in Canada and around the world.

Valentine's Day

WDS will celebrate Valentine's Day on February 12 due to the Calgary Teacher Convention on February 13 and 14. We will be celebrating the themes of kindness, friendship, and belonging, through the sharing of Valentine’s cards at school. This is a fun and important tradition at WDS. Teachers will set aside some time in the afternoon for students to distribute Valentine’s cards to their classmates. If your child chooses to send Valentine’s notes/cards, please send one for every student in the class. Your child's teacher will email you letting you know the total number of Valentine's cards needed.

Teachers have requested that students label the "To" section on the Valentine's card as ‘Friend’ or leave that section blank. There will be no classroom parties or sharing of food during this time. If you choose to attach candy or another item to the Valentine's card, then students will be taking those items home.

School Council Meeting Feb. 20

The next school council meeting will take place on Feb. 20. During this meeting we will be asking parents/guardians to Share Your Voice Regarding School Planning. We know we make better decisions to support student learning when we build understanding and work together. That is why we will be sharing information about school planning and asking you to share your perspectives. You are invited to participate in our survey during the in-person school council meeting on February 20 at 7:00 pm. There will be an opportunity to provide feedback at this meeting about school planning, which includes the school development plan, school budget, and school fees.
